What these four share is the season. Each stands in the far north, each is arranged as separate small buildings rather than as a single block, and each changes what it offers between winter and summer.
Trasti & Trine is a small lodge in pine forest outside Alta, a short drive from the town and close to the Alta River. The house is run together with a working husky yard, and the kitchen is a large part of what it is known for. It is a single independent property rather than one address of a chain.
The idea
What places this house in a winter section is the season it is built around. Guests come for the dark months, for the dog yard and for the river valley, and the lodge is arranged so that the kennel and the dining room sit close to the rooms rather than away from them.
The building
Accommodation is split between rooms in the main house and separate cabins on the grounds, so the plan stays low and spread out rather than stacked. Public sources describe timber interiors, locally made furnishings and windows turned towards the forest. The dog yard stands a short walk from the door and is open to guests.
Practical points
Ask the lodge directly which rooms and cabins are open for the dates you have in mind, since the mix changes through the year. Dog sledding is run from the property itself and depends on snow and daylight. Meal and activity times are set by the house, so confirm them when you write.

Engholm Husky Design Lodge
Set in pine forest just outside Karasjok, Engholm Husky Design Lodge is a group of log cabins that the owner built by hand over many years. A husky yard belongs to the same property. The lodge is independently run and is not part of a hotel group, so everything on the site was made for this one place.
The idea
This section covers northern houses shaped by winter, and this one is shaped by its maker as well. Each cabin was raised from local timber, and the fittings inside, down to carved wooden bowls and washstands, were made on the site. No two cabins repeat one another.
The building
Cabins stand apart among the trees, with log walls, stone floors and turf roofs. Furniture is heavy and hand-cut, and antler, bone and hide appear through the fittings. A main building carries the shared table, and the kennels sit within walking distance of the cabin doors.
Practical points
Cabins differ from one another, so ask which one you are booked into and what it contains. Some facilities are shared between cabins rather than held privately, and that is worth settling before arrival. Sledding and other winter activity depend on snow, and the lodge will say what is running.

Camp Ripan
Camp Ripan sits at the edge of Kiruna, within reach of the town on foot, and is laid out as a village of small cabins rather than a single block. A restaurant, a spa building with saunas and pools, and a camping area belong to the same grounds. The property is independently run under its own name.
The idea
Winter is the season this site is written up for, although it stays busy through the summer as well. The cabins are ordinary and comfortable rather than experimental, and the interest lies in the arrangement: separate front doors, open ground between them, and the mountain horizon beyond the town.
The building
Each cabin has its own entrance and its own bathroom, which keeps the plan flat and spread out. The spa building holds saunas, indoor and outdoor water and treatment rooms, and the restaurant works with regional produce. A play area, mini golf and a padel court stand on the same grounds.
Practical points
The camping part of the site runs on a shorter season than the cabins, so check what is open for your dates. Spa hours are set separately from the hotel and may need booking in advance. Northern lights depend on weather and darkness, and nothing here can promise them.

Snowhotel Kirkenes
Snowhotel Kirkenes stands outside Kirkenes in eastern Finnmark, beside the fjord. Two kinds of accommodation belong to the same operator on one site: a snow-built wing with carved rooms, and separate timber gamme cabins nearby. These are different buildings, and a stay in one is not a stay in the other.
The idea
This is the one place in the section where the sleeping room itself is made of snow and ice. Rooms are carved and decorated by sculptors, and the wing is remade as a matter of course. The cabins beside it are heated and are the ordinary way to sleep on the site.
The building
The snow wing holds carved rooms reached from an internal corridor, with beds dressed for cold sleeping. The gamme cabins take their form from Sami huts and have heating, private bathrooms and wide windows facing the water. A husky yard, a restaurant and a reception building stand on the same grounds.
Practical points
Confirm with the operator which wing your booking covers, since the snow rooms and the cabins are separate. Cold sleeping needs preparation, and the house will explain what is provided. Activity on the site is seasonal, and what runs in winter differs from what runs in summer.
